A comprehensive course description, essential prerequisites, certification outcomes, and advancing to subsequent courses are outlined below.
The minimum pre-requisite for AFA is a valid Intermediate First Aid (Standard First Aid) certificate. You can register for AFA to hold your seat, but you must complete an IFA/SFA course prior to your AFA start date.
Hybrid vs. Traditional Classes: Understanding Your Options
Both formats meet the 80-hour requirement for Advanced First Aid + BLS certification required by Edmonton Fire and Calgary Fire departments.
Delta Emergency offers two flexible formats for the Advanced First Aid + BLS CPR Certification Combo to suit different schedules and learning preferences:
Hybrid Format:
Structure: Combines instructor led evening virtual sessions and in-person weekend learning.
Time Commitment: 80 total hours over four/five weeks (50-60 hours of in-person training over three weekends PLUS mandatory 20-30 hours of at-home, live, virtual instruction)
Resources: Includes online materials, instructor-led group video sessions, skill videos, skill sheets, quizzes, and workbooks.
Who It’s For: Ideal for individuals with full-time jobs or family responsibilities, as it accommodates those who can only attend in-person training on weekends.
Traditional Format:
Structure: Entirely in-person learning.
Time Commitment: 80 total hours over two consecutive weeks, Monday to Friday PLUS home self-study for success.
Resources: Includes online materials, skill videos, skill sheets, quizzes, and workbooks.
Who It’s For: Best for those with weekday availability, offering a fully immersive, face-to-face classroom experience.
Our Advanced First Aid course also comes with BLS CPR at no additional cost.

Advanced First Aid. Online learning + in-person skill days. This program is made to fit those with a full-time job that want to train in Advanced First Aid.
Max of 12 students.
Virtual sessions start at 8pm on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursdays nights. Sessions are between 2-3 hours.
There are 6 in person dates for skill training. Two half evenings, and 4 full weekend days.

The course is a combination of evening virtual sessions and bi-weekly in-person weekend sessions in downtown Calgary.

Our Advanced First Aid course also comes with BLS CPR.
You receive two certifications from signing up - AFA and BLS. BLS CPR expires yearly, the recert cost is $80.00 and only takes 3-4 hours. AFA lasts for 3 years and the recert is ~40% less.
Target Group
This advanced first aid course is approved for pre-hospital medical first responders. Advanced First Aid is a professional level course for emergency responders including firefighters, law-enforcement officers, forestry and industrial workers, and oil and gas safety personnel.
Calgary Fire states an Advanced First Aid certificate (or equivalent) from a Canadian Red Cross provider (that’s us!) is required to be hired. You do not need an AFA certification prior to hiring, but having it before you apply will make your application more competitive. You will need an AFA certification in order to qualify for a Conditional Job Offer; Conditional Job Offers are generally presented ten weeks prior to the start date of a recruit training class.
